The foundation of the University of Pisa dates back to 3 September 1343, by Pope Clement VI. After an initial period full of difficulties, the Pisan university embarked on a rapid climb, which led it to boast six Departments as early as 1839: Theology, Law, Humanities, Medicine, Mathematics and Natural Sciences; with about 600 students enrolled, of which about a hundred foreigners.
It was in 1862 that the Pisan University was recognized by the Italian state as one of the six national primary universities and this was also confirmed in 1923 by the Gentile reform.
From its birth until today, the chairs of the University of Pisa have been chaired by some of the greatest Italian personalities, such as Galileo Gallilei, astronomer, physicist, mathematician and founder of the experimental method, the jurists Francesco Carrara and Francesco Buonamici, the economist Giuseppe Toniolo, the mathematicians Ulisse Dini and Antonio Pacinotti.
